Dropped Hard Drive

Disklabs Data Recovery and Computer Forensics Services are often asked to recover data from dropped hard drives. Generally, it will be an external hard drive, (a hard drive caddy or hard drive enclosure), that needs data recovery services to retrieve the data for the client. The data is often family photos, personal emails, or accounts for SME’s, (Small to Medium Enterprises).

Often, the client would explain that the hard drive caddy was on the table powered up and having data transferred to it when they managed to knock it from their desk onto the floor. They powered the drive on again but could get it to recognise in windows and all they could hear was a loud clicking noises coming from the hard drive.

The dropped hard drive will be sent to Disklabs Data Recovery and Computer Forensics Services’ main office. The failed hard drive will be removed from the caddy in preparation for data recovery diagnosis. During the diagnosis stage of the recovery the hard drive is taken into the clean room to check the surface of the platters for possible damage caused by the fall and the now clicking head stack, (this is done by using a high powered digital microscope).

Upon completion of the data recovery diagnosis stage, the hard drive will be sent to the appropriate engineer to have work done on it. Work can include platter swapping, (swapping of the platter(s) inside the hard drive into the housing of another hard disk), head stack changing, (exchanging the heads of a hard drive with an identical set), firmware corruption, (the firmware on the chips on the circuit board has become corrupted and need manual programming repair), and circuit board repair, (removing chips from a circuit board and replacing them with working ones from another circuit board). Once this stage is completed, software repairs are then initiated. Software repair does all the logical repairs that are required to make the data available readable again.

At this stage, a file listing is produced for the client. This is a list of all the files that are recoverable. These files are sent to the client for inspection and approval. Once the client has approved the data that has been recovered, the data is transferred onto appropriate media suitable to the clients needs, (this can be recovered data placed on CD’s, DVD’s, hard drives, external hard drives, memory cards or even emailed directly to the data recovery client. If the client wants the data shipping back to them, it is done so by insured courier on a next day service unless the client wants an emergency service, when a same day direct insured courier is used.
